Grantchester Cambridge Filming Locations and TV Series Lead Cast List.
Where was Grantchester filmed for ITV?
Beginning in March of 2014 and continuing through until June, ITV’s new detective drama was filmed in London, Cambridge and the real-life village of Grantchester. Specifically, the local Church of St Andrew and St Mary acted as a key filming location.
As the title suggests, this six-part murder mystery is set in Grantchester – a picturesque Cambridgeshire village situated on the River Cam. In fact, the river features in the first scene of episode 1, where characters Sidney and Amanda dive straight in.

Starring ‘Death Comes to Pemberley’ and ‘Happy Valley‘ actor James Norton as vicar Sidney Chambers, alongside ‘Wire in the Blood’ and ‘Soldier Soldier’ star Robson Green, this TV adaptation of James Runcie’s novel ‘Sidney Chambers and the Shadow of Death’ is set in 1953.
Speaking about his time on set, Norton said: “Grantchester is beautiful without being chocolate-boxy. It’s preserved in this period and is gorgeous
and quaint. But it’s never self-consciously so.”
With many of the local residents getting to appear as on-screen extras, actress Tessa Peake-Jones said: “It’s a beautiful village and the people have been very welcoming. They all seem quite excited about us
being here and a number act as the church congregation.”
