New Regular Cast and Characters
Joining the programmes line-up will be two new regular actresses: Linda Bassett and Charlotte Ritchie. Linda, who has previously starred in such shows as ‘Lark Rise To Candleford’, ‘The Life and Adventures of Nick Nickleby’, ‘Sense & Sensibility’ and ‘Grandma’s House’, will take on the role of Nurse Phyllis Crane. Meanwhile, having already appeared in Channel 4’s ‘Fresh Meat’ and BBC3’s ‘Siblings’, Charlotte comes in to play Nurse Barbara Gilbert.
Though not technically a new cast member, the 2014 Christmas special will, for the first time, see Vanessa Redgrave star on screen as the mature Jennifer Worth.
Following last series’ finale, it was surprisingly announced that Jessica Raine had chosen to leave the show, instead hoping to focus her attention on a career in Hollywood. But before the Jenny Lee actress heads off to the States, she’s recently been filming a new BBC crime-drama Partners in Crime.
When does Call the Midwife series 4 start in the UK?
Following the Christmas special in December 2014, the new series returns fully to BBC One in January of 2015. The season 4 UK air date and time has now been officially set for Sunday 18 January 2015 at 8:00pm on BBC1.
Call the Midwife Series 5 Commissioned for 2016
Just as filming of the latest series concluded, it was revealed by BBC One controller Charlotte Moore that an 8 x 60 minute season 5 had already been commissioned for 2016, plus a 2015 Christmas special.
