2014 saw a number of changes to the Gogglebox line-up of families and friends. The existing cast were joined by newcomers such as the caravan dwelling Jenny and Lee from Hull, young Reading housemates Kai, David and James, plus the dog loving Malone family from Manchester.

Series 4 also marked the exit of Clacton-On-Sea’s Linda, George and Pete, as George Gilbey’s decision to enter the Channel 5 Celebrity Big Brother house seemingly made the family no longer eligible to star on Gogglebox. It would appear Channel 4 wish to keep places on the show available strictly for members of the public and not people now famous for other reasons.

This theory was backed-up towards the end of 2014 when the Michael family suddenly disappeared from the show, just as the surprising news broke that farther Andrew Michael was to stand as UKIP’s new candidate for Hastings and Rye.

On the flip side of this, 2014 also saw the first ever celebrity episode of Gogglebox, broadcast to help raise money for Channel 4’s Stand Up to Cancer. Famous names who appeared on the special episode included Miranda Hart, Sarah Hadland, Tom Ellis, Noel Gallagher, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Paul O’Grady and Kathy Burke.

Rounding out the year was a Gogglebox spin-off special, titled ‘Steph and Dom Meet Nigel Farage’. The one-off programme featured posh couple Dominic and Stephanie Parker chatting rather randomly with the controversial UKIP leader.
